"When I take pictures, one side of my jawline looks more saggy." "Can Ultherapy 300 shots improve this facial asymmetry?" If you've been looking into Ultherapy because the left-right difference is particularly noticeable in photos compared to the mirror, this is probably what you've been most curious about.

Hello.

I am Dr. Oh Seung-min, the lead director of O.N Clinic. Recently, some people are seeking Ultherapy not only for the purpose of making their face smaller or lifting it overall, but also to subtly refine the difference in left-right contours.

However, Ultherapy cannot be recommended for all cases where the face appears asymmetrical. This is because if the size or position of the facial bones themselves are different, or if other causes such as the temporomandibular joint, masticatory muscles, or dental occlusion are central, Ultherapy cannot 'correct' that structure.

Conversely, if the degree of skin sagging and the position of soft tissues differ on both sides, and one jawline or cheek appears to be lower, the situation changes slightly. In such cases, instead of treating both sides identically, the treatment depth, range, and energy can be planned differently after checking the actual skin layers.

If you are a reader wondering, "Does my face fit this description?", please read this column to the end. If you focus for about 3 minutes, you may gain the knowledge you need. Can Ultherapy 300 shots be effective for correcting facial asymmetry?

  1. Concluding remarks

Why does facial asymmetry occur? In reality, everyone has some degree of left-right difference in their face. For example, the degree of cheekbone protrusion may differ, the position of the jawbone may be skewed to one side, or the size of the masticatory muscles may change due to a habit of chewing only on one side.

It is not appropriate to proceed with Ultherapy to correct asymmetry that originates from the bone structure or muscles themselves. Ultherapy is not a treatment that moves the position of bones or directly corrects muscle size...

This is because it is a medical device approved for the purpose of lifting sagging jawlines by coagulating tissue using focused ultrasound. So, in what cases can Ultherapy be considered? For example, we can consider cases where one jawline is relatively lower, where the boundary of one jawline appears unusually blurred, or where there is a noticeable difference in the degree of sagging of the left and right jawlines.

However, even in the above cases, we do not simply decide to "perform Ultherapy because of facial asymmetry." During consultations in the examination room, I first compare the height, volume, position of the left and right jawlines, the hollowness under the cheekbones, skin thickness, and fat distribution to identify which side shows more prominent sagging.

Ultherapy (PRIME) can treat by selecting depths of

while viewing the tissue below the skin with real-time ultrasound imaging. Because the thickness of the tissue and the position of each layer differ for each individual, this imaging can be used to plan the treatment area. Especially if asymmetry is a concern, it is not always necessary to plan both sides with the same depth and number of shots.

If one side has relatively prominent jawline sagging, while the opposite side already lacks volume, it may be necessary to determine the treatment area after separately checking the skin and anatomical structure of both sides. Therefore, if the examination reveals that the main cause is differences in bone structure or muscles, I do not try to solve it with Ultherapy alone.

Conversely, if sagging related to Ultherapy's lifting range appears differently on the left and right sides of the face, a treatment plan can be established to reflect that difference. You might simply think, "Since it's asymmetrical, I'll just focus the shots on one side."

However, there is one more condition to consider here. That is, at what depth and in what range will energy be delivered? Can Ultherapy 300 shots be effective for correcting facial asymmetry?

2. Ultherapy 300 shots? We perform the procedure 'like this'.

When people hear "Ultherapy 300 shots," they often assume that 150 shots are evenly divided and applied to each side of the face. However, if the procedure considers facial asymmetry, it is not necessarily performed that way.

As mentioned earlier, the actual tissue condition of the left and right sides of the face may not be the same. A feature of Ultherapy (PRIME) is that it can perform the procedure while checking the internal skin tissue in real-time using DeepSEE™ technology.

For example, what if one jawline has a lot of volume and sags downwards, while the opposite side has less volume and a relatively clear jawline? In this case, applying the same depth, same number of shots, and same treatment area to both sides could actually look unnatural.

I would first divide the areas that actually need treatment on both sides. I would consider which layers to focus on for lifting the side with more sagging, which areas to preserve on the opposite side, and whether there are any areas that are already hollow, such as the cheeks or temples.

Therefore, it is not correct to set the treatment direction as "always apply strong energy to the side with severe asymmetry." It is more reasonable to first check if the skin layer needs energy delivery, and only if necessary, vary the treatment density, depth, or range on the left and right sides.

The same applies to the number of "300 shots." Where these shots are placed on the face and at what depth can be more important information in actual treatment. When a patient has concerns about facial asymmetry, I do not just compare the left and right contours from the front.

I also examine the side profile to check the difference in the position of the jawline and cheeks, and then plan the treatment area after examining the actual tissue depth through Ultherapy (PRIME)'s real-time imaging. I believe that not unnecessarily touching areas lacking volume is also a part of the planning.

Rather than aiming for perfectly identical sides after Ultherapy... it is more realistic to first check if there are any parts among the various factors causing current asymmetry that are related to Ultherapy's lifting application range.

image

If the bone structure and muscles of the face are different, and someone claims to "correct" this with a single lifting procedure, you should be cautious. Ultherapy is not a device that treats facial asymmetry itself... it is better to understand it as a lifting procedure that can plan different treatment areas considering the current state when there is a difference in the degree of sagging of the left and right jawlines.

3. Concluding remarks

image

The face is not originally a perfectly symmetrical structure. Therefore, simply pulling one side harder when asymmetry is discovered is not always the answer. First, it is necessary to identify what is causing the left-right difference among bone structure, muscles, volume, and sagging, and to accurately distinguish the areas where Ultherapy can play a role.

Based on that standard, treatment can approach a much more realistic direction than the vague goal of "asymmetry correction." Thank you very much for reading to the end. This was Dr. Oh Seung-min, lead director, from the examination room.

Thank you. ^^

Frequently Asked Questions

I suspect facial asymmetry because one side of my jawline looks particularly wide in photos. Is Ultherapy possible?

If the sagging of one jawline appears relatively more prominent, the applicability of Ultherapy can be considered after checking the current facial condition. However, if the cause is differences in bone or masticatory muscles, a different type of procedure may be necessary, so distinguishing the cause first is important.

Can more shots be applied to only one side of the face?

The number of treatment lines or the range can be planned differently depending on the left and right conditions. However, it is not simply a matter of delivering more shots to one side; the necessary depth and density must be determined after checking ultrasound images and anatomical structures.

One side under my cheekbone is more hollow; can I still have the procedure?

If an area already lacks volume, it may be necessary to reduce or avoid the treatment area. It is important to also consider volume preservation so as not to emphasize hollowness further while trying to reduce asymmetry.

My jaw itself is rotated to one side; will it still be effective?

Ultherapy cannot correct skeletal asymmetry itself. However, if there is also a difference in skin sagging, a supplementary approach to refine that soft tissue part can be considered.

*Notice

Ultherapy is a non-surgical lifting procedure using micro-focused ultrasound, and the treatment depth and range may vary depending on an individual's skin thickness, fat distribution, facial structure, and degree of sagging.

If the cause of facial asymmetry lies in bone structure, muscles, or dental occlusion, it may be difficult to correct with Ultherapy alone.

After the procedure, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, or temporary sensory changes may occur depending on the individual, so please decide whether to proceed with the procedure after a thorough consultation.
